What Do You Expect from a Writing Conference? And what should you expect?

I think many writers go to conferences with unrealistic expectations. I have addressed this issue in my novel, The Writers' Conference, which is the only book in fiction that I am aware of on this subject. It is dedicated to aspiring writers, who work against almost impossible odds.
Conferences can be valuable if the writers on the staff are good teachers, which can be pot luck. Being a big "literary star" doesn't always translate into being a good teacher. Teaching, like writing, is a skill.
