Did you guys know that it's Banned Books Week?
All the tweets and FB posts about Banned Books reminded me that I wanted to discuss a book that was recently banned in Delaware called THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST, by emily m. danforth. This book is actually one of our Landmark Books on Book Country (in YA LGBTQ) and Nevena interviewed the author last year for the BC blog.
I've been following the story of the banning pretty closely, because I loved the book and I thought emily had awesome advice for writers. emily also wrote this excellent open letter to the school board who banned her book, and I wanted to share it. It was pretty inspiring!! She writes that her reaction to the banning was "one of both sincere disappointment, and also one of unexpected pride."
Have you ever gotten involved in a public debate about what kids read in school? What position did you take?
