I'm a huge fan of The Nostalgia Critic, a web comedian who (hilariously) reviews movies.  Every other week, though, he'll do an editorial video speculating on certain tropes, formulas, trends, and the like.  I found this one, "Is it Right to Nitpick?" particularly interesting, and while it was talking about movies, it can easily apply to writing as well.
