What is, in your opinion, the best sci-fi book of 2012, and why? In particular, what aspect of the work (e.g., style, worldbuilding, character development) did you enjoy the most and would like to emulate in your own writing?

I'll just take these last few hours to nominate John Scalzi's Redshirts. Best described as the rebellion of Kirk's luckless security officers, it's witty, engaging and manages to be a great commentary on the nature of writing as well.
