I just found this interesting site: thebookdesigner.com. It was mentioned somewhere - here, perhaps? - and it looks very helpful, talking about covers and the process involved in their creation. It has a monthly contest, you submit your cover, from the entries a handful are chosen and critiqued. Lots of links to other information that I haven't had time to explore.
