I tend to like the outliers, work that doesn't adhere to genre categories, including so-called literary fiction. My own writing I would classify as outlier fiction also, idiosyncratic. I love to write a first line and see where it takes me by force of logic and free association.
To me, a good book is accessible to the widest possible audience, written in clear and sonorous prose, populated with characters any reader might recognize, with a story driven by character and ideas that engage the reader to consider how best to live.
I also agree with Martin Amis the literature is a war on cliche. I hate cliche, and anything that suggests that it might be.
