I believe that the story trumps all. Genre is a handy convention to demarcate interests, but I will read anything if the story is interesting. I find myself drawn to pyrrhic victories, Thermopylaean stands, and the devolution of systems. Whether those are in interpersonal relationships, international relationships, or interstellar relationships. When all is said and done, though, story trumps all.
My writing tends to be descriptive. I struggle constantly with telling, instead of letting the characters breathe and form themselves through their actions. I write as if the story is spoken. As such, at times my sentences become long and densely populated with commas and clauses. This makes sense when spoken, but confusing on the page.
If I was to trumpet my own abilities, I'd say that I have an eye for action and the peccadilloes of the individual. Otherwise, I am horribly self conscious and critical.
Enjoy?
