My reading tastes are eclectic, and so is my writing. In non-fiction, I gravitate toward science, memoir, and philosophy. I am particularly interested in the evolution of language, astrophysics, particle physics, alternative realities, and evolutionary biology. (The latter is no surprise, since I was trained as a biologist and worked in that field for many years.)
In fiction, my first love was science fiction (beginning when I was nine years old), and it remains my preference. I love the way science fiction expands the realm of possibility. In my mind, science fiction is the literature of ideas, and ideas are exciting. However, I also enjoy a good fantasy and am open to a well-written thriller or mystery.
I've written and published six books. My favorites are my memoir "Antarctica: A Year at the Bottom of the World, " "Under Antarctic Ice, " a collaboration with photographer Norbert Wu, and the first book in my middle grade science fiction trilogy, "The Talisman of Elam."
