I began writing at the age of eight, but my early work was apparently ahead of the times, and sold poorly. Thirteen hundred page epics about eight year old cowgirl/detectives trying to make the world safe for democracy simply weren't in great demand. Romance. however, WAS in great demand, so my first two books were purchased by Harlequin. I've also sold more than thirty e-novels (of the sort you don't show to your mother or list on your resume) to various online publishers. Also, dozens of short stories, in the same genre. No apologies, though. They pay the bills, and they're great fun to write. As far as "style" goes, I like to think that Janet Evanovich writes like me. I don't call what I write "chick lit" because that suggests "Sex and the City, " and none of my characters like to shop, especially for shoes, even if they had the money, which they usually don't.
