I read a wide variety of stories. I started at five in fantasy, and didn't find science fiction I really liked until I was in my teens. I haven't found a single genre I *don't* like, although Historical Fiction needs to be pretty special to lure me in. Alternate History, on the other hand, gets me every time I read it.
When I'm writing, I tend to work in reverse; I have a climactic scene and work backwards from that. It's worked all right so far. I've written Science Fiction;
Space Opera with Hard Sci-Fi underpinnings, Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, SteamPunk; Gaslamp Fantasy really, and Apocalyptic Fantasy. The SteamPunk, Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance have been published.
Most of what I write is a little hard to fit into a genre cleanly. My best example of that would be the Paranormal Romance with Molecular Biology at a Quantum Chromodynamic level expressed in Aristotelian Elemental terminology.
Although the werecamel stripper gives it a run for it's money.
