Explore the Genre Map

Each section of the Genre Map is structured around eight main tones—light, dark, funny, scary, innocent, sexy, realistic, and fantastic. These tones act as compass points to direct your search for the perfect read.

There are several different ways you can navigate the map. You can page around manually, pick up the Book Country nib in the Heads Up Display (HUD) and drop it down in an area of interest, or click on the tone bar at each compass point to zoom quickly toward a particular section. Books appear in the HUD as colored squares; the color is determined by each book's primary tone.

You can also use our Landmark Books—well-known titles that exemplify different tones in each genre —to guide you toward Book Country books you might enjoy. You can access the Landmark Books in the HUD (see the big black ‘L’s), on the map, or you can click on them in the scroll-down menu on the left side of the page.

Published books, which are available for purchase through Book Country, will also appear on the map. They will have fully designed covers and appear as black squares on the HUD.

To learn more about any book on the Map, click on the cover image and you’ll see an ID card appear that shows you a brief description and the book’s current rating. You can click through to read and review from this detail card.
